What to do about hair scrunchies?

I keep hearing that scrunchies are out of style, so I really don't know what to do. I have really long thick hair so wouldn't those elastic bands break or damage my hair? I always put my hair in a ponytail because its just annoying to have my hair in my eyes all the time. I like wearing a ponytail, and I don't want to change that but are scrunchies really so bad? I just don't understand what's wrong with them. I always use black scrunchies so they blend in with my hair color, and I think side ponytails are really cute... Any suggestions? And what brand of hair elastic is the best and doesn't damage hair?

they're made of a soft fabric, and there is no glue or metal bands so they can't break. and they are really good at holding back my hair.
